SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 15, 2006-- New Frost & Sullivan Research Finds That Palm Treo Smartphone ROI Period is Less Than Two Months; Average Sales/Field Agents Productivity Gains Save $11,125 Per Year
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) and Frost & Sullivan today released results of a smartphone end-user survey declaring that the Palm(R) Treo(TM) smartphone is the smartphone of choice for businesses. According to the report, mobile professionals are choosing Treo smartphones for the platform's abundant business-ready applications, high degree of flexibility, choice of operating systems, and power and convenience. In addition, Frost & Sullivan assessed the return on investment (ROI) of Treo smartphones used in a range of businesses and conservatively determined the average payback period to be less than two months. The results also reported that sales and field agents experienced productivity gains that equaled $11,125 in average savings per agent each year."Palm is strongly positioned to be the smartphone brand name of choice for enterprise markets for a number of reasons," said Dan Colquhoun, vice president at Frost & Sullivan. "Treo smartphone users reported significant productivity improvements; workflow efficiency gains; the ability to respond more quickly to critical, time-sensitive communications; and reduced expenditures on other hardware."
Frost & Sullivan surveyed 531 U.S. enterprise employees holding either line-of-business or IT positions. The survey indicated that, when given a choice, more enterprise employees would opt for a Treo smartphone than for any other competing product.
"We wanted to provide our field sales and service force with a seamless way to stay connected to the people and information they need to do their jobs even better," said David Fairbanks, chief information officer, Silicon Graphics (SGI). "By giving them a phone and access to email and schedules using GoodLink all in one device, the Treo smartphone has fundamentally improved the way they work."(1)
Participants cited the following reasons for choosing Palm Treo smartphones:
-- Business-ready Applications -- At present, there are thousands of software applications for Treo smartphones available from third-party partners, including titles for finance, insurance, real estate, healthcare, education, sales force automation and IT management. -- Flexibility -- Treo smartphones can connect to most back-end email server systems and infrastructures, and provide flexibility in the operating systems supported. For servers, there are solutions for all versions of Microsoft Exchange/Outlook, Lotus Domino/Notes and for Group Wise. Palm has also announced a client for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server via BlackBerry Connect(TM). -- Choice of OS -- With a choice of open, business-ready operating systems, technical and business decision makers are able to agree that simplicity, security and user satisfaction are most important in mobilizing an enterprise. Both Palm OS(R) and Windows Mobile(R) platforms work seamlessly with existing email, enterprise applications and IT infrastructure. -- Power and Convenience -- Treo smartphones allow users to make calls, handle email, send messages and turn "downtime into found time" while waiting at the airport, sitting in the back of a taxi or even just waiting for meetings to begin.(1)
"Frost & Sullivan's findings validate what we hear from our customers -- Palm delivers the easy-to-use mobile solutions they need to do their jobs better and make entire organizations more productive," said Tara Griffin, vice president, enterprise markets, for Palm, Inc. "IT managers and decision makers will find this ROI research valuable when facing the decision of how to best make their organizations more competitive by going mobile with a secure, easy-to-deploy solution."
Currently, 40 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies use Treo smartphones, and an additional 35 percent are in testing or trials. Palm's flexible, standards-based approach and customer-centric model represent its commitment to serving the growing mobile needs of small, large and global businesses.

Healthcare Customers Standardize on Palm Products to Help Reduce Medical Errors, Improve Quality of Care, Cut Costs and Increase Efficiencies
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 2006--
Palm Treo Smartphones Enhance Delivery of Information Beyond
Hospital Offices, Clinics and Campuses in New and Different
Ways for Efficient Remote Access
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) continues its leadership in the healthcare industry by meeting the mobile needs of industry professionals, ranging from physicians to long-term-care providers. Adoption of award-winning Palm(R) Treo(TM) smartphones in healthcare has furthered Palm's goal of assisting in the rapid delivery of quality care by providing critical information to caregivers where they need it, not just within the walls of the healthcare facility.(1)
The movement toward improving healthcare through the use of electronic health records (EHR) is an important national agenda item. President Bush, most recently in his State of the Union address, reiterated his support, marking the third consecutive year for a call to action to expand the use of electronic records and other health information technology to help control costs and reduce dangerous medical errors. Palm is driven by this larger national goal of improving the healthcare system and has been a key enabler in the conversion to EHR. The popularity and familiarity among physicians of the Palm platform and its hallmark ease of use have helped accelerate the transition and adoption of mobile EHR within healthcare organizations.
Today, organizations in the medical field are standardizing on Palm handhelds and smartphones, ranging from hospitals, clinics and long-term-care facilities to clinical-trials companies and medical schools. Palm healthcare customers include CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, Columbus Children's Hospital, MedStar Health, Good Samaritan Society, Ohio State University Medical Center, and PHT Corp. Following are snapshots of how these organizations are using Palm products:
-- CHRISTUS Spohn Health System uses 100-200 Palm smartphones and
handhelds to deliver up-to-the-minute mobile information to
its doctors.(1) The doctors purchase their own handheld
devices and use technology provided through CHRISTUS Spohn to
improve decision making at the point of care, reduce errors,
streamline the billing process, and improve return on
investment. Now doctors can walk into a patient's room, view
the electronic results of a lab test, and enter billing codes
with charge capture on the way out, leaving more time for the
bedside visit.
-- Columbus Children's Hospital (CCH) uses 620 Palm smartphones
and handhelds to provide its physicians, staff and executives
with the patient and reference information they need to
provide the best patient care in the most efficient manner.
With Palm products, physicians and executives are readily
accessible even while they are away from the office(1),
accelerating informed decision making.
-- MedStar Health uses Palm handhelds, smartphones and mobile
managers to disseminate vital information where it's
needed.(1) This gives doctors and nurses a wealth of
information at their fingertips, including medical references,
patient data, email, and personal information.
-- Good Samaritan Society uses 1,000 Palm handhelds to keep
accurate and up-to-date records for residents in skilled
nursing facilities. With Palm products, staff captures key
data and make it readily available for analysis and other
important activities.
-- Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC) uses 3,170 Palm
handhelds to provide the people making life-and-death
decisions every day with the reference data they need. Medical
students, attending physicians and residents can now obtain
all their data from a single source, helping them become more
efficient and freeing up valuable time to devote to patient
care.
-- PHT Corporation uses tens of thousands of Palm handhelds and
smartphones each year for its LogPad(R) application, the
market-leading electronic patient diary solution for clinical
trials. LogPad is used by patients around the globe to collect
and transmit high-quality, time-stamped self-reported data,
which is reviewed by clinical researchers via the Internet.
The high-quality data captured and managed by the LogPad
System enables better science and more successful trials.
"Physicians play a critical role in our society -- they're expected to save and prolong lives of our loved ones. This demands constant access to critical information, ranging from potential adverse drug reactions to laboratory test results. Since they're rarely at their desks, they need real-time access to patient data and medical information at the point of care, where it matters most," said Tara Griffin, vice president, enterprise markets, for Palm, Inc. "Palm makes available a wide range of information, from clinical notes to health insurance formularies, including Medicare Part D information. With these important resources at their finger tips, doctors can now spend more quality time with patients."
"What I like best about the system is that it saves time," said Dr. Mauro Ortiz, cardiologist, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System. "I'd much rather sit down and listen to my patient than have to chase down lab results or patient data on a computer somewhere. Patients want us to treat them like the old family physician used to, and this helps me do that."
"Columbus Children's Hospital has been using Palm devices for at least five years and has been standardized on them since 2002," said Schon Crouse, mobility support analyst for CCH. "We chose Palm devices because of their versatility and the wide range of medical software that runs on them."
"We're contributing to making more tech-savvy physicians than ever before. Having the information readily available not only helps them make better decisions but also helps train physicians for the 21st century," said Wasif Malik, student educational services and mobile solutions director for OSUMC.

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Palm Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) are showcasing the new Palm(R) Treo(TM) 700w smartphone, the first Treo smartphone to run the Microsoft(R) Windows Mobile(R) 5.0 operating system, this week at the HIMSS 2006 Annual Conference & Exhibition, the leading healthcare information technology trade show.
The new smartphone allows hospitals that operate in the Windows Mobile computing environment to extend the Palm experience to their users. Palm and Microsoft are featuring demonstrations of PatientKeeper on the Treo 700w smartphone in the Palm booth (No. 7501), the Microsoft booth (No. 4533) and the PatientKeeper Inc. booth (No. 1218).
"For the first time, hospital IT decision-makers who prefer Windows Mobile can offer their physicians, nurses and other clinicians a Palm Treo smartphone. With the Treo smartphone, they can wirelessly access patient information, including radiology reports; obtain real-time access to lab results and clinical notes; and send security-enhanced e-mail messages to other caregivers,"* said Tara Griffin, vice president of enterprise markets for Palm. "The combined forces of Microsoft and Palm provide physicians with an important time-saving tool so doctors can spend more quality time with their patients instead of on paperwork."
Windows Mobile 5.0 software delivers on industry requirements for platform flexibility to customize mobile devices and solutions, and features productivity enhancements including updated Microsoft Office Word Mobile, Excel(R) Mobile and PowerPoint(R) Mobile software; persistent memory storage for more efficient data management; a powerful multimedia experience enabled by Windows Media(R) Player 10 Mobile; and support for hard drives.
These strengths empower industry partners such as Palm to create new solutions and devices that can be tailored to specific industries. In healthcare, this means the availability of efficient, security-enhanced mobile solutions on popular platforms that connect physicians and other clinicians like never before. Healthcare platforms, such as PatientKeeper, enable medical professionals to collaborate with colleagues in real time and enable them to be fully informed and up to date.
"We're pleased to extend the capabilities of Windows Mobile further into the healthcare space with the Palm Treo device," said Steve Shihadeh, general manager of Healthcare and Life Sciences at Microsoft. "Whether they're used for checking patient records, consulting with a colleague or any number of other critical clinical activities, solutions using Windows Mobile not only generate efficiencies and help reduce costs in the healthcare setting, but -- most important -- also contribute to higher-quality patient care."
The award-winning PatientKeeper Platform is an integral part of the IT strategies of organizations across the healthcare continuum, ranging from small physician practices and community hospitals to major academic medical centers and some of the largest health systems in the country. With the software from PatientKeeper, physicians can access their patients' electronic records, write prescriptions, enter charges, dictate notes, document encounters, place orders or send security-enhanced messages to other caregivers -- all in a single integrated environment.* PatientKeeper will play a key role for Microsoft and Palm as Treo 700w smartphones are deployed in healthcare organizations.
This flexibility allows clients to add cutting-edge functionality to their existing IT infrastructure without wholesale replacement. At the bedside, in the office, at home, or even in the car or at a ballgame, physicians turn to PatientKeeper to save time, increase revenue, remain competitive, communicate with other caregivers, and improve patient safety and care.
Mobile healthcare solutions from Palm and its software partners such as Microsoft can help improve efficiencies, reduce costs, improve the quality of care and reduce medical errors. These solutions also allow physicians, nurses and other clinicians to do the following:
