SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 2005--Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that John Hartnett has been promoted to senior vice president, worldwide sales and customer relations. Hartnett reports to Ed Colligan, Palm president and chief executive officer.

"John's leadership and success in the Americas gives me great confidence in his ability to expand Palm's market share worldwide," said Colligan. "We've had tremendous success growing Treo smartphone sales in the United States, and we see substantial opportunities for success in Europe and Asia as well."

According to Canalys research, Palm(R) Treo(TM) smartphone shipments in the United States substantially outpaced converged device growth in Q3 of 2005. Canalys estimates that Treo unit shipments grew 77 percent in Q3 2005 compared with the year-ago period. This compares to the overall U.S. marketplace growth of 40 percent and was more than twice that of Palm's nearest competitor.

Hartnett, a native of Ireland who leads Palm's sales and customer relations for the Americas, takes on the additional responsibilities for driving growth and serving customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as Asia Pacific.

"Expanding relationships with global carriers is a key emphasis in our growth strategy," said Hartnett. "We're also focusing on sales to businesses of all sizes, which includes close collaboration with email and software partners, such as Good Technologies, Microsoft and Research In Motion."

Hartnett brings more than 20 years' experience across sales, marketing and operations in the United States and internationally. Prior to his new role, Hartnett was Palm senior vice president of Americas sales and support, and before that, he was vice president of eCommerce and accessory solutions. Hartnett joined the company upon the acquisition of Handspring, Inc., in October 2003. He had been Handspring's executive vice president of worldwide operations, service, support and eCommerce. Previously, Hartnett was senior vice president of worldwide marketing and operations for MetaCreations and the director of international operations at Claris.

Hartnett has a marketing degree from the Marketing Institute of Ireland and is a graduate of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and Stanford University's executive-management program. He was selected by Irish America magazine as one of the Top 100 Irish-American businesspeople of 2005.
