Consortium of Oregon Schools Uses Mentoring and Training to Spread Handheld-integration Strategy Statewide
More than 7,000 students in eight Oregon school districts are using Palm(R) handheld computers this school year, thanks to a creative mentoring program developed by three recipients of a federal technology grant, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) said today. Their handheld-integration strategy brings in teachers statewide.
"Originally, the districts applied for a one-time grant, but state instructional technology guidelines allowed them to reapply if the district was willing to mentor another district in the use of technology," said Lynn Lary, instructional technology specialist at Lane Education Service District, which supports 16 school districts.
Intent on extending their grants, Lary and two other grant recipients, Colt Gill, assistant superintendent of South Lane School District, and Todd Hamilton, instructional technology specialist at Eugene School District, got to work collaborating on a mentoring and training program. That was three years ago. Today, the program has generated district partnerships throughout the state and has resulted in the formation of the Northwest Handheld Integration Project.
The first year, handhelds were implemented in South Lane and Eugene School districts. "Handhelds are becoming so common in our classrooms now that the idea of using them in an instructional capacity is much less foreign," explained Hamilton, who initiated and implemented the program for Eugene's School District 4J. "But three years ago it was a different story. It took a leap of faith on the school district's part, and then an extremely successful program to prove that Palm handhelds are about more than calendars and address books. It didn't take long before teachers and other innovative districts saw the potential."
"Upon reapplication, we started mentoring three partners -- Three Rivers, Creswell and Springfield school districts -- and built from there," said Lary. "This year we reapplied for the grant and added Fern Ridge, Glendale, Riddle and Hermiston school districts. Creswell, where I am project director, reapplied and brought on Fern Ridge school district as a partner. This model keeps the momentum going."
Schools Say Motivation Increased
At the student level, the benefits are clear. "Motivation is huge," said Gill. "We thought it would taper off, but kids are producing more and doing better work than they did with paper and pencils. Using a handheld keeps them on task and helps them to be more successful." Although he doesn't have proof that handheld use directly improves test scores, Gill says student achievement is up across the district.
Lary agrees that the handhelds increase motivation. "We had a teacher in middle school who offered an elective math class to interest kids in problem solving," she said. "Usually he has 17 to 20 kids each semester. Once he started using Palm handhelds, 50 kids wanted in. That's the kind of hook these tools are for kids. When it comes to handhelds, kids want access all the time."
Fifteen districts in the state received technology grants this year, and nearly half of them are focused on Palm handheld technology, according to Lary. Some districts, such as Creswell, have made one-to-one computing their goal. While schools implement their own plans for using the handhelds, all of them focus on core subject areas and on helping increase student achievement.
Gill's goal for South Lane is to increase access to technology and improve student achievement in science, math and language arts. One area where improvement is already evident is in writing. "They are writing more than ever before. With Palm handhelds and keyboards, they do everything from brainstorming, outlining and developing paragraphs to editing and revising. One of our rural schools has a blended classroom of sixth, seventh and eighth grades. They do almost all their writing and editing on the Palm handheld. They upload the documents to a desktop computer and publish them in magazine format."
The successful use of handhelds in classrooms comes as no surprise to Gill. His district was the recipient of a 2001 Palm Education Pioneer (PEP) program grant, which gave handhelds to more than 100 K-12 classrooms and nine research hubs who conducted research on the effectiveness of Palm handhelds for learning and teaching in K-12 classrooms and in other learning environments. In exchange, grant recipients participated in a nationwide study by SRI International's Center for Technology in Learning in Menlo Park, Calif., which developed and conducted evaluations to study the uses, experiences and effectiveness of the handhelds for teaching and learning. Of the participants in the objective, large-scale study, 93 percent said they believe that handhelds can have a positive impact on students' learning, and 89 percent said they found the handhelds to be an effective instructional tool for teachers.
Staff Development is Cornerstone of Projects
Lary said the key to success is providing teachers with ongoing staff development. Each mentoring district has a project director who works with the other project directors to develop ongoing training throughout the school year and to organize a handheld summer camp. Each week, teachers also get Handheld Integration Project (HIP) eNews, which offers integration and classroom management tips contributed by mentor schools from the previous year. The Northwest Handheld Integration Project website (www.nwhandheld.org) provides lesson plans, news on teacher training, software reviews and links to other related sites.
"We try to offer everything a teacher needs for continued success in the classroom," said Lary. "I certainly think that when it comes to having a leadership model, this is it."

(Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that PHT Corporation, one of its leading clinical trials customers, is using 1,500 Palm(R) Treo(TM) 650 smartphones to collect and wirelessly transmit(1) self-reported data from subjects using PHT's customized LogPad(R) application in clinical trials across the globe. PHT plans to roll out the initial set of smartphones over a six-month period for use during a series of clinical trials.
Today's announcement puts PHT, which has deployed more than 20,000 Palm handheld devices in the past two years, at the forefront of smartphone use in clinical research. The system shortcuts only supports small (about 45 characters in size) shortcut definitions. ShortCut5 shortcuts are in addition to the system shortcuts.
Limitations. Maximum of fifty shortcuts definitions. Each shortcut name is from one to four characters in length. Shortcut names are case sensitive and cannot contain the period "." character. ShortCut5 is only supported on PalmOS 5.x and on locales that use single byte characters.
ShortCut5 will not recursively expand shortcut definitions.
Instructions. To expand a shortcut, enter a period "." character followed immediately by the shortcut name. Do not change fields or change the insertion point within the same field while entering the shortcut name.
App list. This is used to select a list of apps to either enable or disable (based upon the activation options in the Preferences).

What are macros? Macros are four character commands that may be included within a shortcut definition to do something special. Macros always begin with the two letter "@@" sequence. Please remember that macros are not shortcut names.
Time and date stamps. Use the four character "@@ts" and "@@ds" macros for time and date stamps. The format of these time and data stamps are defined in the Formats preference panel. Selecting menu items. The first nine menu items (top to bottom) in the first three pulldown menus (left to right) can be selected (separators are ignored). The format of the macros are "@@xy" where "x" is the pulldown menu number (1-3 going left to right) and where "y" is the menu item (1-9 going top to bottom). For instance, "@@12" selects the second menu item in the first pulldown menu.
Pressing buttons. The "@@b1", "@@b2", "@@b3", "@@b4" macros will press a button. The macro names represent the ordering of the buttons based upon their screen position. The ordering is bottom to top, left to right. This is useful for complex shortcuts that need to span multiple forms.
Changing text fields. The "@@f1", "@@f2", "@@f3", "@@f4" macros will change the insertion point to a different text field. Durham, NC – October 12, 2005 - Schools and parents looking for innovative ways to enhance math skills of upper-elementary and middle school students now have a fun new tool available to them: Size It Up by Leading Step, Inc. Size It Up is a series of three games that are played on Palm OS handheld computers to help students identify and compare numbers and math operations.
Working together as a complete learning system, Size It Up’s three games, Arrows, Bricks and Numbers, are designed to help young students learn whole numbers, decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, and negative numbers, and even operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication or division.
Arrows is a timed game to help students learn to compare the size of numbers as they put them in order from smallest to largest. As new numbers appear on the left-hand side of the screen, students shoot them like arrows into a column of numbers on the right-hand side of the screen so that they land between the smaller and larger numbers. If the “arrow” fits into the correct gap on the number column, the number will be added to the line and a new number-arrow will appear to be shot into place. Teachers, parents or the students themselves can choose to focus on a particular type of number to use in the game, such as whole numbers or decimals, or they can select multiple types and have the game randomly pick a different one for each round.
The Bricks game helps students to identify numbers based on prompts made by the game. Numbers are displayed as “bricks” in a wall, and the goal is to clear levels of bricks by picking the correct number that answers a command prompt. For example, the prompt at the top of the screen may ask the player to select the smallest or largest number, a number that falls within a given range, or a number with a given digit in a specified place value. As the correct bricks are selected, they turn multi-colored and a new command will be displayed. When all of the bricks on a level have been correctly selected, that level will disappear and a new level will appear on top. Players must clear the specified number of levels for each round in a specified amount of time.
Arrows and Bricks both help students to practice their math tables in a fun and unique way. Most states have standards that focus on kids being completely fluent in these basic operations and these games are a more engaging way for students to master these skills than simply doing math drills.
The goal of Numbers is to identify the numeric equivalent of a value that is specified using a different notation, such as a written form of a word or the expanded notation. The game offers multiple variations, giving players the opportunity to unscramble the digits of a number, fill in the blanks of the target number, or come up with the target number entirely on their own with no assistance—other than the Hint option which is offered on all games.
In consultation with educators, Leading Step’s programs were created to provide a number of advantages over other computerized learning tools. First, the variety of controls allow teachers to meet a wide range of needs for various students, enabling them to customize the programs for different grade levels, but also to individual student levels, meeting the full range of students in their classes from those still working on basic skills to more advanced pupils.
Teachers and parents can monitor each player’s progress through the Size It Up game system by storing the scores for up to eight players on each PDA. Using the game score statistics, they can easily determine how well players are progressing in developing different math skills.
