Consortium of Oregon Schools Uses Mentoring and Training to Spread Handheld-integration Strategy Statewide
More than 7,000 students in eight Oregon school districts are using Palm(R) handheld computers this school year, thanks to a creative mentoring program developed by three recipients of a federal technology grant, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) said today. Their handheld-integration strategy brings in teachers statewide.
"Originally, the districts applied for a one-time grant, but state instructional technology guidelines allowed them to reapply if the district was willing to mentor another district in the use of technology," said Lynn Lary, instructional technology specialist at Lane Education Service District, which supports 16 school districts.
Intent on extending their grants, Lary and two other grant recipients, Colt Gill, assistant superintendent of South Lane School District, and Todd Hamilton, instructional technology specialist at Eugene School District, got to work collaborating on a mentoring and training program. That was three years ago. Today, the program has generated district partnerships throughout the state and has resulted in the formation of the Northwest Handheld Integration Project.
The first year, handhelds were implemented in South Lane and Eugene School districts. "Handhelds are becoming so common in our classrooms now that the idea of using them in an instructional capacity is much less foreign," explained Hamilton, who initiated and implemented the program for Eugene's School District 4J. "But three years ago it was a different story. It took a leap of faith on the school district's part, and then an extremely successful program to prove that Palm handhelds are about more than calendars and address books. It didn't take long before teachers and other innovative districts saw the potential."
"Upon reapplication, we started mentoring three partners -- Three Rivers, Creswell and Springfield school districts -- and built from there," said Lary. "This year we reapplied for the grant and added Fern Ridge, Glendale, Riddle and Hermiston school districts. Creswell, where I am project director, reapplied and brought on Fern Ridge school district as a partner. This model keeps the momentum going."
Schools Say Motivation Increased
At the student level, the benefits are clear. "Motivation is huge," said Gill. "We thought it would taper off, but kids are producing more and doing better work than they did with paper and pencils. Using a handheld keeps them on task and helps them to be more successful." Although he doesn't have proof that handheld use directly improves test scores, Gill says student achievement is up across the district.
Lary agrees that the handhelds increase motivation. "We had a teacher in middle school who offered an elective math class to interest kids in problem solving," she said. "Usually he has 17 to 20 kids each semester. Once he started using Palm handhelds, 50 kids wanted in. That's the kind of hook these tools are for kids. When it comes to handhelds, kids want access all the time."
Fifteen districts in the state received technology grants this year, and nearly half of them are focused on Palm handheld technology, according to Lary. Some districts, such as Creswell, have made one-to-one computing their goal. While schools implement their own plans for using the handhelds, all of them focus on core subject areas and on helping increase student achievement.
Gill's goal for South Lane is to increase access to technology and improve student achievement in science, math and language arts. One area where improvement is already evident is in writing. "They are writing more than ever before. With Palm handhelds and keyboards, they do everything from brainstorming, outlining and developing paragraphs to editing and revising. One of our rural schools has a blended classroom of sixth, seventh and eighth grades. They do almost all their writing and editing on the Palm handheld. They upload the documents to a desktop computer and publish them in magazine format."
The successful use of handhelds in classrooms comes as no surprise to Gill. His district was the recipient of a 2001 Palm Education Pioneer (PEP) program grant, which gave handhelds to more than 100 K-12 classrooms and nine research hubs who conducted research on the effectiveness of Palm handhelds for learning and teaching in K-12 classrooms and in other learning environments. In exchange, grant recipients participated in a nationwide study by SRI International's Center for Technology in Learning in Menlo Park, Calif., which developed and conducted evaluations to study the uses, experiences and effectiveness of the handhelds for teaching and learning. Of the participants in the objective, large-scale study, 93 percent said they believe that handhelds can have a positive impact on students' learning, and 89 percent said they found the handhelds to be an effective instructional tool for teachers.
Staff Development is Cornerstone of Projects
Lary said the key to success is providing teachers with ongoing staff development. Each mentoring district has a project director who works with the other project directors to develop ongoing training throughout the school year and to organize a handheld summer camp. Each week, teachers also get Handheld Integration Project (HIP) eNews, which offers integration and classroom management tips contributed by mentor schools from the previous year. The Northwest Handheld Integration Project website (www.nwhandheld.org) provides lesson plans, news on teacher training, software reviews and links to other related sites.
"We try to offer everything a teacher needs for continued success in the classroom," said Lary. "I certainly think that when it comes to having a leadership model, this is it."

Earthcomber Partners with Exxon Mobil, Avalon and Other Publishers to Produce “Spot Guides™,” Linking Content with Interactive Maps on Mobile Devices
CHICAGO– A new era for print products was launched today with the debut of “Spot Guides™” – the first books made for mobile devices that combine mapping and personalization.
Earthcomber LLC created the free technology that incorporates maps and personal favorites with traditional travel, reference and other mainstream publications. Among the first offerings are city guides from Mobil Travel Guide (the company's first venture into mobile publishing) and Avalon Publishing's Moon Metro series.
Spot Guides run on Palm OS phones and PDAs, and provide location sensing and area searching with or without GPS. Versions for Windows Mobile, cell phones and BlackBerry devices are in production.
Much like the iPodtm has miniaturized music to become portable and personal, Earthcomber Spot Guides present users with their favorite kinds of information as they come upon the actual places where it is most useful. Multiple Spot Guides, unabridged and with photos, can fit onto a single, stamp-sized memory card.
Spot Guides are a “plug-in” to Earthcomber's basic free mobile software and built-in digital maps. The patent-pending technology maintains individual privacy while constantly combing the area each person travels for unlimited numbers of personal interests -- anything from an ATM to a waterfall, cup of coffee, museum, bistro, school, golf course, bar or even local events.
Unlike books in print, Spot Guides give a person the option of exploring the electronic guide through hot-linked pages, special icons, photos and searches – all within the context of a book title. As the reader considers any place mentioned, Earthcomber displays the distance to that spot. As the person moves, distances are updated.
“Imagine your bookmarks tapping you on the shoulder,” says Jim Brady, Earthcomber founder and former Oprah new media executive. “Spot Guides are like books that you can leave ‘on.’ The idea is that life is so much more interesting, and we could get so much more out of every day, if only we could know what's right around us.”
The Spot Guide format is appealing for a wide variety of books. Many publishers find Earthcomber attractive as a new vehicle for putting out mobile products, and organizations also are turning to Earthcomber to publish guides that are location-aware and ultra-portable:
The Greater Minneapolis Convention and Visitors Association packed city history, neighborhood sketches, travel info and member locations into a Spot Guide;
Damron Company is offering a comprehensive guide to gay-friendly places and services across the US;
The Find-A-Grave website has created a mobile famous grave spotter.
“With no printing, paper, shipping or shelf-stocking, Spot Guides dodge the usual costs and risks,” Brady said.
Guides are sold online at www.earthcomber.com and publisher web sites, and priced typically between $9.50 and $20. Some are given away free, depending on the publisher's intent. Free Earthcomber mapping and personal interest software is also available at www.earthcomber.com.
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 2005-- Customized LogPad Application Captures Body Diagrams, Visual Measurements and Other Data Accurately and Efficiently From Subjects and Sites Around the Globe
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that PHT Corporation, one of its leading clinical trials customers, is using 1,500 Palm(R) Treo(TM) 650 smartphones to collect and wirelessly transmit(1) self-reported data from subjects using PHT's customized LogPad(R) application in clinical trials across the globe. PHT plans to roll out the initial set of smartphones over a six-month period for use during a series of clinical trials.
Today's announcement puts PHT, which has deployed more than 20,000 Palm handheld devices in the past two years, at the forefront of smartphone use in clinical research. More than 70 biopharmaceutical and medical device companies, including 13 of the top 15 drug-development firms in the world, use PHT's market-leading electronic patient reported outcome (ePRO) solutions in more than 180 clinical studies worldwide.
Recently, PHT deployed Treo 650 smartphones for use by asthma patients in the AIR2 clinical trial sponsored by Asthmatx, an innovative medical device manufacturer located in Mountain View, Calif. Asthmatx is the developer of the Alair System(R), which consists of a single-use device and a controller that delivers radiofrequency energy during an outpatient bronchoscopic procedure known as Bronchial Thermoplasty(TM). In this pivotal clinical trial designed to establish the safety and efficacy of the Alair System for the treatment of asthma, a subset of patients will use Treo 650 smartphones to record daily information about their asthma symptoms. Patients using the Treo smartphone will use the device each morning and evening to record their asthma symptoms, medication use and the impact of their asthma on daily life during the clinical trial. The stored data is then automatically transmitted wirelessly to a secure central server. Researchers review the subject data over the web in real time, using PHT's StudyWorks application to track and manage subject enrollment, diary-completion compliance and subject safety information. PHT's LogPad application, implemented on the Treo 650 smartphones, features body diagrams, visual analog scales and other graphical data-collection screens that are intuitive and convenient for subjects to use.
PHT wanted an easy-to-use mobile wireless product that boosts the accuracy and efficiency of collecting and transmitting patient-reported data. The company chose the Treo 650 smartphone running on Palm OS(R) because of its flexibility and the company's positive experience and history of building customized Palm OS applications. PHT primarily uses Cingular Wireless as its wireless service provider in the United States.
"The Treo smartphone is the best wireless device out there. We looked at other devices and found the graphical user interface on the Treo smartphone to be the most intuitive. It offers everything we expect from a Palm device," said Phil Lee, president and chief executive officer for PHT. "And the new memory architecture is a very useful feature, making it easier to preserve subject data even in the event of battery loss."
PHT's rapid growth has been fueled by the increasing adoption of ePRO systems by clinical-trial sponsors. Drug-development companies are finding electronic patient diaries offer tangible benefits, including measurable improvements in data quality through error reduction and decreased data variability. ePRO solutions also help streamline trial-management tasks, providing greater efficiencies for improved cycle time. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expressed interest in automatically time-stamping patient data and in the high quality of data collected by electronic patient diaries. PHT's LogPad System has been used in more than 180 clinical trials across the globe, more than any other ePRO provider.
While selecting the next generation of wireless products upon which to deploy the LogPad application, PHT identified the following Treo 650 smartphone qualities as most-valued:
-- Capacity for offline data capture;
-- Reliability of data storage;
-- Seamless transmission of stored data over convenient GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks (1);
-- The ability to suppress phone and contact functionality for patients;
-- Ease of support, maintenance and localization;
-- Bright, high-resolution screen; and
-- The built-in keyboard that patients can use to enter certain alphanumeric data.
"Palm is proud of the strong relationship it has built with PHT over the years and the contributions to medical science that we are able to make by pooling our complementary strengths," said Tara Griffin, vice president, enterprise sales, for Palm. "It's exciting and encouraging to see the clinical trials market take advantage of the secure wireless capabilities of our converged devices so that researchers can capture, review and log high-quality subject data more quickly, reducing the time it takes an approved drug to safely get to market."
Palm's flexible, standards-based and customer-centric approach to mobile computing for small, large and global businesses provides a compelling and expanding product portfolio with hardware, software and services to better meet the growing mobile needs of business.

Origami is not just for kids, and over time has evolved into an art for people of all ages. It provides focus and helps relax the body and mind.
Once I released this program, I realized that this is the only Origami palm program, which makes this a one of a kind.
Although this program may take up a lot of memory, it can be run from an expansion card.

Founding member of Lab's new Mobile Linux Initiative
BEAVERTON, Ore. and SUNNYVALE, Calif. - October 17, 2005 — The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL or the Labs), a global consortium dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux®, and PalmSource, Inc. (NASDAQ: PSRC), today announced that PalmSource has joined OSDL as a founding member of the Labs' new Mobile Linux Initiative. PalmSource is the provider of Palm OS®, a leading operating system powering next generation phones and mobile devices.
PalmSource announced last year that it would build its new applications framework on and port its Palm OS platform to run on Linux. As a member of OSDL and an MLI participant, PalmSource will work with other Lab members and the development community to advance the use of Linux in mobile devices. The MLI will focus industry and open source developer resources on Linux-based operating system technical challenges, foster development of applications for Linux-based mobile devices, deliver requirements definition documents and use cases, and host complementary open source projects that support the initiative
"PalmSource believes that Linux has the potential to become a leading operating system for mobile devices, and we are committed to accelerating that process," said Michael Kelley, senior vice president of engineering for PalmSource. "By joining OSDL, and being a part of the Mobile Linux Initiative, we can work closely with Linux industry pioneers to contribute to the on-going development and adoption of mobile Linux."
With more than 190 million mobile phone units sold in the second quarter of 2005, research firm Gartner, Inc. recently reported sales were up 21 percent from a year ago and it estimates that there will be 2.6 billion mobile phones in use worldwide by the end of 2009. As the mobile market continues to explode, handset manufacturers are increasingly turning to Linux as a strategic platform to deliver more capable mobile devices, increase flexibility, speed time-to-market, and lower costs.
"We are excited that PalmSource has chosen to be a founding member of OSDL's Mobile Linux Initiative," said Stuart Cohen, OSDL CEO. "PalmSource is a welcome addition to the OSDL membership and will be a driving force for growing Linux in the mobile device market."

ShortCut5 is a PalmOS 5.x preference panel which supports large (up to 4096 characters in size) shortcut definitions.
The system shortcuts only supports small (about 45 characters in size) shortcut definitions. ShortCut5 shortcuts are in addition to the system shortcuts.
Limitations. Maximum of fifty shortcuts definitions. Each shortcut name is from one to four characters in length. Shortcut names are case sensitive and cannot contain the period "." character. ShortCut5 is only supported on PalmOS 5.x and on locales that use single byte characters.
ShortCut5 will not recursively expand shortcut definitions.
Instructions. To expand a shortcut, enter a period "." character followed immediately by the shortcut name. Do not change fields or change the insertion point within the same field while entering the shortcut name.
App list. This is used to select a list of apps to either enable or disable (based upon the activation options in the Preferences).
Activation options in the Preferences. This is used to selectively disable and enable this preference panel. (1) Enable all apps. ShortCut5 is always enabled. (2) Disable all apps. ShortCut5 is always disabled. (3) Disable for app list. ShortCut5 is enabled for all apps except for those in the app list. (4) Enable for app list. ShortCut5 is disabled for all apps except for those in the app list.
Optimal performance. For best performance, use the app list and activation options to disable ShortCut5 when executing games or other event intensive (graphics) applications.
Notes. The shortcut will expand at a moderate speed (as to not overflow the key queue).
* Macros *
What are macros? Macros are four character commands that may be included within a shortcut definition to do something special. Macros always begin with the two letter "@@" sequence. Please remember that macros are not shortcut names.
Time and date stamps. Use the four character "@@ts" and "@@ds" macros for time and date stamps. The format of these time and data stamps are defined in the Formats preference panel. Or use the following macros to generate your own date stamp: "@@d0" full day names (Sunday, Monday, etc), "@@d3" three letter day names (Sun, Mon, etc), "@@d1" single or double digit day numbers, "@@d2" double digit day numbers (with a leading zero if single digit), "@@m0" full month names (January, February, etc), "@@m3" three letter month names (Jan, Feb, etc), "@@m1" single or double digit month numbers, "@@m2" double digit month numbers (with a leading zero if single digit), "@@y2" double digit year numbers (04, 05, etc), and "@@y4" four digit year numbers (2004, 2005, etc).
Selecting menu items. The first nine menu items (top to bottom) in the first three pulldown menus (left to right) can be selected (separators are ignored). The format of the macros are "@@xy" where "x" is the pulldown menu number (1-3 going left to right) and where "y" is the menu item (1-9 going top to bottom). For instance, "@@12" selects the second menu item in the first pulldown menu.
Pressing buttons. The "@@b1", "@@b2", "@@b3", "@@b4" macros will press a button. The macro names represent the ordering of the buttons based upon their screen position. The ordering is bottom to top, left to right. This is useful for complex shortcuts that need to span multiple forms.
Changing text fields. The "@@f1", "@@f2", "@@f3", "@@f4" macros will change the insertion point to a different text field. The macro names represent the ordering of the text fields based upon their screen position. The ordering is top to bottom, left to right. This is useful for complex shortcuts that need to span multiple text fields on a single form. Text fields within tables are not supported.
Launching apps. (1) The "@@h1", "@@h2", "@@h3", "@@h4" macros will launch the four hard key applications.
Durham, NC – October 12, 2005 - Schools and parents looking for innovative ways to enhance math skills of upper-elementary and middle school students now have a fun new tool available to them: Size It Up by Leading Step, Inc. Size It Up is a series of three games that are played on Palm OS handheld computers to help students identify and compare numbers and math operations.
Working together as a complete learning system, Size It Up’s three games, Arrows, Bricks and Numbers, are designed to help young students learn whole numbers, decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, and negative numbers, and even operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication or division.
Arrows is a timed game to help students learn to compare the size of numbers as they put them in order from smallest to largest. As new numbers appear on the left-hand side of the screen, students shoot them like arrows into a column of numbers on the right-hand side of the screen so that they land between the smaller and larger numbers. If the “arrow” fits into the correct gap on the number column, the number will be added to the line and a new number-arrow will appear to be shot into place. Teachers, parents or the students themselves can choose to focus on a particular type of number to use in the game, such as whole numbers or decimals, or they can select multiple types and have the game randomly pick a different one for each round.
The Bricks game helps students to identify numbers based on prompts made by the game. Numbers are displayed as “bricks” in a wall, and the goal is to clear levels of bricks by picking the correct number that answers a command prompt. For example, the prompt at the top of the screen may ask the player to select the smallest or largest number, a number that falls within a given range, or a number with a given digit in a specified place value. As the correct bricks are selected, they turn multi-colored and a new command will be displayed. When all of the bricks on a level have been correctly selected, that level will disappear and a new level will appear on top. Players must clear the specified number of levels for each round in a specified amount of time.
Arrows and Bricks both help students to practice their math tables in a fun and unique way. Most states have standards that focus on kids being completely fluent in these basic operations and these games are a more engaging way for students to master these skills than simply doing math drills.
The goal of Numbers is to identify the numeric equivalent of a value that is specified using a different notation, such as a written form of a word or the expanded notation. The game offers multiple variations, giving players the opportunity to unscramble the digits of a number, fill in the blanks of the target number, or come up with the target number entirely on their own with no assistance—other than the Hint option which is offered on all games.
In consultation with educators, Leading Step’s programs were created to provide a number of advantages over other computerized learning tools. First, the variety of controls allow teachers to meet a wide range of needs for various students, enabling them to customize the programs for different grade levels, but also to individual student levels, meeting the full range of students in their classes from those still working on basic skills to more advanced pupils.
Teachers and parents can monitor each player’s progress through the Size It Up game system by storing the scores for up to eight players on each PDA. Using the game score statistics, they can easily determine how well players are progressing in developing different math skills.
“Our learning programs with low-cost PDAs provide educators and parents alike a great tool for both enhancing math, geometry and spelling skills and offering increased access to computers, which helps to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act,” said Renee Revis, president of Leading Step, Inc. “Size It Up provides a very fun way for kids to grow in their math abilities while teachers can gauge their progress.”
