The number of moves is displayed on the center tile.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Titan, Book One

by Michael A. Martin, Andy Mangels

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW STAR TREK ® ODYSSEY

After almost a decade of strife against foes such as the Borg, the Cardassians, the Klingons, and the Dominion, the United Federation of Planets is at the dawn of a new era. Starfleet is renewing its mission of peaceful exploration, diplomacy, and the expansion of knowledge. Among the starships spearheading that endeavor is the U.S.S. Titan, commanded by Captain William T. Riker and manned by the most biologically varied and culturally diverse crew in Starfleet history.

But their mission does not begin according to plan.

In the wake of Star Trek ® Nemesis, Praetor Shinzon, slayer of the Romulan Senate, is dead. The power vacuum created by his demise has put the Romulan Star Empire, longtime adversary of the Federation, at the brink of civil war. Competing factions now vie for control of their fragmenting civilization, and if the empire should fall, that entire area of the galaxy may destabilize.

To restore order to the region, Titan’s long-anticipated mission of exploration is delayed as Starfleet assigns Riker to set up power-sharing talks among the Romulan factions. But even as the first tentative steps are taken toward building a new Romulus, the remnants of the Tal Shiar, the dreaded Romulan intelligence service, are regrouping behind the scenes for a power play of their own. With no other help available, Riker and the Titan crew become the last hope to prevent the quadrant from falling into chaos.

All over the world, in a flash, cars are left unmanned. Terror and chaos continues worldwide as the cataclysm unfolds. For those left behind, the apocalypse has just begun.

This bestselling end-of-time fiction series tells the riveting stories of people who, after the rapture of the church are "left behind" to experience the tribulation and other events prior to Christ's return to Earth. Shopping Mavens Get High-Tech Reinforcement for Final Push to Christmas, Using to Find Gifts in Nearby Shops

NEW YORK, Dec. 22 – Desperate times call for desperate measures, and with Christmas just days away, shoppers can now resort to a mobile-tech guide that sniffs out gifts as they walk.

The publishers of Where to Wear, a connoisseur’s directory of merchandise in every “in” store in shopping capitals around the world, released today a high-tech electronic guide for New York City that scans stores in the vicinity and reports which ones have hits on the user’s shopping list.

“This is the Google of – except you don’t have to do searches, you don’t have to ask for every item over and over and you don’t even have to be thinking about it,” said Jill Fairchild, founder of Where to Wear and daughter of fashion publishing mogul John Fairchild. “It just happens on your handheld. It’s becoming all about accessibility and this is like having a personal shopper at your fingertips.”

The Where to Wear “spot guide” downloads to s or . Using built-in maps and location awareness, a user can choose one or more items from a particular shopping list, and the device will scan through thousands of store listings to show which places have the item, and where they are on the map.

“There's plenty of shopping time, you can even be a hero, if you have the info,” said Jim Brady, self-described compulsive shopper and CEO of Earthcomber, the developer of the -targeting shopping guide, during a hasty demonstration. “Watch this.”

Tapping the map at the intersection of Spring and Crosby just above the Village, more than a dozen miniature shopping bags dotted the screen, marking nearby stores that had “hits” for Brady's list of outerwear, cashmere, retro, wearable art and Western.

Tapping “Western,” four shops appeared, including “Western Spirit,” where Where to Wear's insiders promised, “You don't need to be a Texan to dress like a cowboy,” and inventoried moccasins, hats, boots, buckles and pearl-buttoned shirts on three floors.

The shopping guide is available – instantly - as a download at www.Earthcomber.com, where a number of other mobile guides from publishers such as Mobil Travel Guides, Moon and Damron are available. The cost for the Where to Wear shopping guide is $9.95.

Where to Wear will be releasing guides for other American cities in January and cities abroad later in 2006, the publishers said.

The Bible: A Very Short Introduction

It is sometimes said that the Bible is one of the most unread books in the world, yet has been a major force in the development of Western culture and continues to exert an enormous influence over many people's lives. This Very Short Introduction looks at the importance accorded to the Bible by different communities and cultures and attempts to explain why it has generated such a rich variety of uses and interpretations. It explores how the Bible was written, the development of the canon, the role of Biblical criticism, the appropriation of the Bible in high and popular culture, and its use for political ends.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 20, 2005-- Quarterly Revenue $444.6 M; Up 18% Year-over-year; Company Achieves 36% U.S. Converged Device Market Share

Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today reported revenue of $444.6 million in its second quarter of fiscal year 2006, ended Dec. 2, up 18 percent from the year-ago period.

"Achieving the eighth consecutive quarter of year-over-year double-digit revenue growth and growing our converged device market share to 36 percent in the United States(1) are significant accomplishments," said Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm. "We'll roll out the Palm Treo 700w smartphone based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile, and we'll announce three additional new smartphones during calendar year 2006."

Net income was $260.9 million, or $5.02 per diluted share. Net income reflected the effect of a partial reversal of a deferred tax asset valuation allowance of $226.3 million. This compares to net income for the second quarter of fiscal year 2005 of $24.7 million, or $0.48 per diluted share.

Net income in the second fiscal quarter, on a non-GAAP(2) basis, totaled $24.4 million, or $0.47 per diluted share, excluding the effects of restructuring charges, amortization of intangible assets and deferred stock-based compensation, the related income tax provision, and the partial reversal of our valuation allowance against our deferred tax asset. This compares to non-GAAP net income in the second quarter of fiscal year 2005 of $27.2 million, or $0.53 per diluted share, which excluded the effects of amortization of intangible assets and deferred stock-based compensation. Non-GAAP net income in the second quarter of fiscal year 2005 was calculated utilizing a tax rate of approximately 19 percent, compared to the 40 percent tax rate in the second quarter of fiscal year 2006.

"During the second quarter, we added seven new carriers to expand the geographic reach of our products, and for the first time we began selling Treo smartphones in China," Colligan said. "We shipped more than 1 million Treo smartphones during the first half of fiscal year 2006, which is just shy of what we shipped in all of fiscal year 2005. With our strong market position, and excellent execution, I have confidence in our long-term growth opportunity."

Fiscal Year 2006 Third Quarter Outlook

Based on current trends, Palm is providing its outlook for financial results in the third quarter of fiscal year 2006, ending March 3, 2006. At this time, the company expects:

-- Revenue in the range of $370 million to $375 million; -- Gross margin between 33.0 percent and 33.5 percent; -- Operating expenses between $100 million and $102 million on a GAAP basis and between $99 million and $101 million on a non-GAAP basis; and -- Earnings per diluted share between $0.46 and $0.49 on a GAAP basis and between $0.31 and $0.33 on a non-GAAP basis, which excludes amortization of intangible assets and deferred stock-based compensation and reflects the difference between utilizing a 40 percent effective tax rate on a non-GAAP basis, compared to approximately 7 percent to 8 percent effective tax rate on a GAAP basis. Strategic Highlights

During the second quarter of fiscal 2006, the company accomplished the following:

-- Announced the development of a next-generation Palm(R) Treo(TM) smartphone, the Treo 700w, which will be introduced to the marketplace in early calendar year 2006. This product is based on Windows Mobile 5.0 and runs on the Verizon Wireless EV-DO network; -- Announced the availability of BlackBerry Connect capability in early 2006 for current and future Treo 650 smartphone users with service through certified carriers; -- Opened its European Engineering Centre in Dublin, where engineers will develop custom software for Palm smartphones in close collaboration with mobile operators in the Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) region; -- Expanded business with seven new carriers during the quarter. They are Hutch in India; TIM in Brazil; TELUS Mobility in Canada; Entel in Chile; Alltel in the United States; and Telefonica/movistar and Iusacell, both in Mexico; and -- Introduced two new handheld computers, the Palm TX, featuring integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth(R) wireless technologies and a large, high-resolution color screen, and the Palm Z22, an easy-to-use and compact color organizer priced to compete with paper organizer systems.

NON-GAAP FINANCIAL MEASURES: To supplement the company's consolidated financial statements presented in accordance with GAAP, Palm uses non-GAAP measures of certain components of financial performance, including operating income (loss), net income (loss) and per share data, which are adjusted from results based on GAAP to exclude certain expenses, gains and losses. These non-GAAP measures are provided to enhance investors' overall understanding of the company's current financial performance and the company's prospects for the future. Specifically, the company believes the non-GAAP results provide useful information to both management and investors by excluding certain expenses, gains and losses that may not be indicative of its core operating results. These non-GAAP results are among the primary indicators management uses as a basis for planning and forecasting of future periods and facilitating management's internal comparisons to the company's historical operating results and comparisons to competitors' operating results. In addition, because Palm has historically reported certain non-GAAP results to investors, the company believes the inclusion of non-GAAP measures provides consistency in the company's financial reporting. These measures should be considered in addition to results prepared in accordance with GAAP, but should not be considered a substitute for, or superior to, GAAP results. These non-GAAP financial measures may also be different from non-GAAP financial measures used by other companies. Consistent with the company's practice, the non-GAAP measures included in this press release have been reconciled to the nearest GAAP measure.

Description

Barney Harrigan, a successful computer entrepreneur, discovers that his young and impressionable wife has been lured by her fanatical sister into the Glory Cult, a ruthless and powerful group in Oregon run by a charismatic "guru." Determined to free her from the cult's grasp and return her to him and their four year old son, he prevails upon an old lover in Washington D.C., Naomi Forman -- a human rights activist -- to use her political connections to help him. After initial reluctance, Naomi eventually enlists in his cause, despite her conviction that brainwashing is a myth. She will soon come to realize how wrong she is.

Barney and Naomi travel to Oregon and team up with a pair of tough, cunning deprogrammers. They plan to kidnap Barney's wife from the cult. However, they soon find themselves in a deadly cat and mouse game with Jeremiah, the David Koresh-like leader of the Glories. Their rescue attempt triggers a surprising and horrific climax.

Readers will be on edge throughout this page-turner of a novel, and will learn how the power of sinister forces using mind control techniques can turn innocent people into weapons of destruction. Cult deals directly with issues of brainwashing and suicide and has implicit references to the recent World Trade Center tragedy. Mr. Adler has had long experience in studying cults and their dangers.

If The War of the Roses, Warren Adler's masterpiece, inspired one of the most famous movies on divorce, Cult will evoke in you a fear, a dread that reiterates itself every moment, a lack of poise that turns deadly with each breath you take and forces you to take a step back and analyze the little aquarium in which you have let your concepts regarding society and life swim freely, feeding it, unbothered because there is always a lid on the top. It is a wake up call for all of us, who casually watch the 8'o clock news, who browse bloody pages of newspapers with ease, who think all's well with our near and dear ones. This cocoon of self-assurance is torn apart by Cult. Truly a masterpiece, it relates to the life of an average citizen and appeals to the most avid reader because the subject matter is most relevant to our time. The threat that looms large before us in the form of organizations promoting hatred, racial discrimination and religious violence has long been disregarded. But in the face of the painful September 11 memories Americans and the world as a whole has been forced to come under one shelter and deal with the menace of terrorism and cults, which promote violence.

Barney Harrigan, a successful computer entrepreneur, discovers that his young wife has been lured by her fanatical sister into the Glory Cult, a ruthless and powerful group in Oregon run by a charismatic "guru." Determined to free her from the cult's grasp and return her to him and their four-year-old son, he teams up with his old lover, a human rights activist from Washington and two cunning deprogrammers. What ensues is truly incredible as this foursome, who is very much aware of the hazards, hatch a plan to kidnap the young wife from the cult. The heart-stopping climax is worth every buck you pay and one of the most well written end sequences I have read in a while. The enemy is tough and so is the determination of the rescuers, a treat you wouldn't want to miss in the traditional 'Good vs. Big Baddy "I have nine lives"' style.

This is a well researched book with visions and dimensions which will frighten as the book takes us to a safari, a real jungle full of vile human beings who exist to question establishments and peace. The psychological perspective, the intricacies of brainwashing are all set with an authentic tune, chillingly real. The author has rightly pointed out a few quirks in our society, thought process and political establishments, which contributes to the rise of such evil. What impressed me most about the book was the author's determination to produce an absolutely neat and engaging work. I had expected an over-indulgence in 'gore,' which would have harmed the book in a big way. But nowhere has the author slipped in treatment and has succeeded in keeping the plot glitch free.

There are letdowns, but all of that is forgivable simply because this man moulds a tough subject with a scintillating story line to deliver a punch, which will not just leave a bruise on your skin, but an imprint on your heart. With a really good cover and an absolutely terrific tale in between, Cult goes down as one of the best fiction works of all time, which has taken up the responsibility of holding a mirror to our mottled society. Hats off to the master.

Williard's two brothers, Jerry, a naval ensign, and Jason (Jumpin' Jase) the Marine fighter pilot who regularly loses 15-million-dollar planes, join the fun and then it is like no war ever recorded. Wilder than M*A*S*H, a hilarious romp.

This book is the first in the Willard Brothers series. The other books in the series are Postwar Dinosaur Blues and Bigfoot Crazy.

The Holy Bible, New Living Translation was first published in 1996 and its second edition appeared in 2004. The challenge for the translators of the NLT was to create a text that would communicate as clearly and powerfully to today's readers as the original texts did to readers and listeners in the ancient biblical world. The resulting translation, that quickly became one of the most popular Bibles in the English-speaking world, is easy to read and understand, while also accurately communicating the meaning and content of the original biblical texts. The NLT is a general-purpose text especially good for study, devotional reading and to be read aloud in public worship.

Powerful BlackBerry e-mail, voice and data capabilities in traditional phone form factor with tethered modem capability

Scarborough, Ontario and Waterloo, Ontario - TELUS and Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced the availability of the BlackBerry® 7130e™ operating on TELUS’ national Wireless High Speed network.

The BlackBerry 7130e delivers all the popular communications and information capabilities available through the BlackBerry wireless platform, integrated in a traditional wireless phone form factor. The handset can also serve as a tethered modem for clients looking to connect their laptop computers to the Internet and other data networks at broadband speeds.

TELUS’ Wireless High Speed network offers typical download speeds of 400 to 700 kilobits per second. Based on the CDMA 1xEVDO standard, the newest Third Generation (3G) wireless data technology available, Wireless High Speed is available in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal, and will roll out to more urban centres throughout 2006. The BlackBerry 7130e is also designed to be fully backward compatible with TELUS’ national 1X data network, which covers more than 90% of the Canadian population and offers fast mobile data connections where Wireless High Speed is not yet available.

“TELUS’ introduction of the BlackBerry 7130e device reaffirms our commitment to providing our clients with the broadest selection of data devices for high-speed mobile communications in both professional and personal environments,” said Robert Blumenthal, TELUS’ senior vice president of products and services. “Operating on TELUS’ Wireless High Speed network, the BlackBerry 7130e is the ideal device for clients who need fast access to data networks and the powerful e-mail and productivity tools associated with BlackBerry, all in a compact handset design.”

The new BlackBerry 7130e combines comprehensive phone functionality with the renowned BlackBerry platform features, including support for “push-based” wireless e-mail, Web browser, text messaging, personal organiser and other productivity applications. Seamlessly operating on TELUS’ 1X and Wireless High Speed networks, the compact and stylish BlackBerry 7130e delivers enhanced usability as well as fast Web and data capabilities.

“The BlackBerry 7130e together with TELUS’ fast Wireless High Speed network is a powerful combination for mobile professionals who want the convenience and productivity benefits of BlackBerry in a sleek mobile phone design” said Larry Conlee, Chief Operating Officer at Research In Motion. “The BlackBerry 7130e is an excellent choice for customers looking to upgrade their existing phone with a more powerful handset that combines a full-featured phone with industry-leading wireless e-mail and data applications.”

The BlackBerry 7130e also features SureType™ keyboard technology from RIM, which converges a traditional wireless keypad and a QWERTY-style keyboard to fit elegantly within the size of a traditional wireless phone form factor. The keyboard works in conjunction with a sophisticated, real-time software system that incorporates a large word database, linguistic intelligence and advanced learning capabilities to automatically interpret keystrokes and recognise words with a high degree of accuracy. Through an integrated keyboard and software system, SureType provides users with an instinctively familiar look and feel and allows them to dial phone numbers and type messages with ease.

For corporate clients, BlackBerry Enterprise Server™ software tightly integrates with Microsoft® Exchange or IBM Lotus® Domino™ and works with existing enterprise systems to allow secure, push-based, wireless access to e-mail and other corporate data.

For individuals and smaller businesses, BlackBerry Internet Service™ allows users to access up to 10 corporate or personal e-mail accounts (including Microsoft® Exchange, IBM Lotus® Domino and most popular ISP e-mail accounts) from a single device without the need for server software.

"Roy has done a great job building the foundation of Palm EMEA's wireless business around the Treo(TM) product family, and I'm confident he'll take Palm EMEA to a new level for our entire portfolio of products," said Hartnett. A Computer in Your Hand

Carrying around an address book and planner is becoming a thing of the past. With new PDA developments, you can manage your contacts and schedule, use e-mail, and even listen to music. Personal Digital Assistants, originally called "Palm Pilots," previously were used just for retrieving basic information. Today, using some of the more advanced models could possibly replace the need to carry a laptop computer. Modern PDAs can play music, games, videos, write documents, and connect to networks and databases -- nothing short of a desktop computer.

Although newer PDAs have the processing power of a computer, they still have some limitations. Inputting information is done by handwriting recognition or by a miniature keyboard. Skilled users can input 20 - 30 words per minute, less than half the speed of a good typist on a full-size keyboard. PDAs with a color screen tend to run through battery life faster. Finally, because the small screen size the number of prograqm options that can be displayed, the programs available aren’t as advanced because the user doesn’t have as much control over the program.

Despite these limitations, the market for PDAs is continuing to expand. Students, doctors, and business professionals are increasingly relying on PDAs for computing on the go. Common PDA applications include spreadsheet, word processing, database, financial management, and games. PDAs synchronize files with your computer so that you can take your important information with you and update it when needed.

What to Look For

The two basic types of PDAs are Palm and Windows Mobile devices. The Palm Pilot was the first PDA available and its operation is very intuitive; some compared it to the Macintosh. Windows Mobile devices run an operating system very similar to Windows on desktop computers. Although Windows Mobile offers advanced features, its interface is still somewhat difficult to navigate in comparison to the Palm.

When purchasing a PDA, make sure that the programs on the PDA are compatible with the programs on your computer. Test out different models, with keyboard and with handwriting recognition, to see which one fits your preferences best. Also consider which application you will be using most. If you plan on using your PDA primarily for e-mail, get a PDA with a good keyboard and good battery life. If you plan on taking digital photos, your main concern should be the quality of the digital camera and the screen.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 2005--

Superior Menu Systems, User Interface, Display, Style and Design
Draw U.S. Consumers

According to global research and consulting company Strategy Analytics, the Palm(R) Treo(TM) 650 smartphone from Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) is the highest-rated converged device in the United States. The Treo 650's "Best in Class" performance rating comes from a head-to-head consumer test against the RIM BlackBerry 7100, the Samsung SCH-i730 and the UTStarcomm PPC6600. These results come from hands-on consumer testing by the Strategy Analytics Advanced Wireless User Panel.

"More mobile professionals these days are choosing their device based on look, feel and ease of use," said Kevin Nolan, director of the Advanced Wireless Laboratory at Strategy Analytics. "The Treo 650's small form factor and stylish design blended with Palm's hallmark user experience make it more appealing than other converged devices on the market today. Participants struggled with the BlackBerry 7100's steep out-of-the-box learning curve."

With carrier activation, the Palm Treo 650 smartphone combines a compact, full-featured mobile phone with email, a Palm OS(R) organizer, messaging, web access and digital camera, letting users organize and simplify their business and personal lives all in one device.(1) The Treo 650 builds on the award-winning design of the Treo 600 with new and improved features, including a high-resolution screen; expanded multimedia capabilities, such as an MP3 player and video capture and playback(2); removable battery; non-volatile memory; and Bluetooth(R) wireless technology.

"We've set out to change the way people work, live and play," said Ken Wirt, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Palm. "Customers tell us the Treo smartphone is the right form factor with the right integration of software and hardware to make using a phone, managing email and staying on top of all your important information and meetings easy. The Strategy Analytics study further validates that customers regard the Treo 650 as one of the best converged devices on the market."

Institutions interested in reviewing the Strategy Analytics converged device benchmark report "Blackberry Learning Curve Too Steep for Consumers as Palm Treo Sets New Usability Standard" should contact Kevin Nolan, director of the Advanced Wireless Laboratory at Strategy Analytics, at +44 1908 423609 (UK) or knolan@strategyanalytics.com.

The Life Application Bible Notes in combination with PDA Bible With You for your most loved Bible translation and the Bible study features provided by the reader, will make an essential tool that will help God's life-changing message to work in your life.

System Requirements

* Palm OS Required
Our products for Palm PDA devices require at least Palm OS version 3.5.
* Memory Requirements
Because of the great number of GMPSoft resources you may use from either RAM of your Palm PDA or an expansion card, it is very difficult to define the exact amount of memory you must have on your handheld. To help you with that we have provided free full functional trial of the products — you install the full volumes of the files to test and adjust the necessary system resources.
For example:
o If you use Bible With You for one Bible translation from RAM, provide approximately 300Kb free RAM on your Palm PDA necessary for proper operation (besides the memory required for installing the product's files in RAM or the card.)
o If you use more GMPSoft applications and Study Books (commentaries, Bible notes, lexicons) from RAM or a card, you need to provide more free RAM for proper operation (critical requirements for the free RAM vary from 700Kb to 1.3Mb.)
* Expansion Cards
GMPSoft Palm PDA applications use VFS to work with MMC, SD cards and Memory Sticks. You may store both the application files (.prc type) and the databases (.pdb files) on an expansion card. (Install the .prc files in \Palm\Launcher folder of the card.)

The Christmas ringtones can be downloaded directly to the Treo, from Ringo’s built-in Ringtones Store, or from the web at http://www.electricpocket.com/ringotones.html. The ringtones are free, but operator data charges may apply for mobile downloads.
