SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 30, 2005--

Agents of North America's Largest Financial Services Organization Use Mobile Solution to Help Clients Complete Insurance Applications

Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that agents of Primerica Financial Services, a subsidiary of Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE:C), are using 4,000 Palm(R) handhelds and smartphones to complete insurance applications in the comfort of a client's own home. Primerica developed its own customized Palm OS(R) application -- called TurboApps -- to run on a variety of Palm devices, including the latest Palm Tungsten(TM) handhelds and Palm Treo(TM) smartphones.

Primerica provides its 6 million clients with financial products and services, such as term life insurance, mutual funds, variable annuities, loans and long-term care insurance. With up to 60 percent of applications pouring in the last week of each month, processing the high volume of paperwork was very challenging.

The company decided it needed a paperless process and a powerful mobile device. Primerica chose to develop on the Palm OS platform in part because the majority of its agents and executives already were users of Palm products, ranging from handheld devices that were primarily used to organize calendar, contacts and personal information to advanced all-in-one devices that include email and cell phone capabilities. Familiarity with Palm devices made the learning curve virtually flat.

In addition, the Palm OS platform is flexible enough to expertly handle applications customized for the needs of particular industries, from healthcare to finance. Palm handhelds and smartphones met Primerica's system requirements for powerful, portable, affordable devices with the ability to handle the customized TurboApps application. Now sales agents can synchronize large volumes of sensitive information, completing the application process in just minutes. In the past, this process took several days.

"We needed a technology that could handle an extensive scope of information and also ease the processing burden on our agents," said Tom Swift, executive vice president of field technology at Primerica. "With TurboApps running on Palm handhelds and smartphones, our agents have access to the applications necessary to get the job done. Being able to process apps quicker with fewer mistakes is a win for clients, agents and the company."

Palm handhelds and smartphones running the custom-built TurboApps application help Primerica agents do the following:
  • -- Minimize errors and incomplete applications by guiding them through the process;
  • -- Provide clients with the best service possible;
  • -- Keep client information more secure;
  • -- Save time by not having to enter redundant data or wait for postal deliveries;
  • -- Speed turnaround time;
  • -- Submit applications as soon as their next synchronization; and
  • -- Submit client payments faster.

"By empowering 4,000 agents with a mobile application like TurboApps, Primerica is enabling an ever-increasing mobile workforce to dramatically increase productivity," said Tara Griffin, vice president, enterprise sales, Palm, Inc. "Palm is committed to equipping organizations such as Primerica with mobile solutions that raise the bar for efficient business processes and quality customer service."

Jeff Kirvin measures the Treo 650 against his 13 features he requires to make it suitable for writing and the 650 comes close. 1src - The One Source for all things Palm-powered related. :: Editorials : Is the Treo 650 the Perfect Writer's PDA?

A few years ago, I wrote an article speculating on what I thought it would take to make the perfect writer's PDA. I got into this biz because I thought there had to be a better way to write on the go than how I wrote my first novel , longhand in a paper day planner.

FreewarePalm: Switch5 v4.5 Description: Switch5 is a PalmOS 5 app which provides a simple way to switch between recently used applications. Think of it as a PalmOS 5 version of SwitchHack (I''m not in any way affiliated with SwitchHack... other than being a registered user). Instructions * A stroke from the Home/Applications circle to the Menu circle causes the last previously used application to be launched. * A stroke from the Menu circle to the Home/Applications circle causes a list of the most recently used applications (maximum of ten) to appear. You then have ten seconds to tap on the application you want launched. Notes * Use at your own risk. It works for me on my Zire 71 but your mileage may vary :) * If a menu, popup list, or dialog box is active then the list of the most recently used applications will not appear. * The list of the most recently used applications is not backed up during HotSync and will be cleared by a reset. * Switch5 will need to be manually launched (one time only) if the app was copied from an expansion card. * Switch5 only works for PalmOS 5. * Switch5 does not support apps on external memory cards. Use TealAlias pr PowerRun to support apps on external memory cards. * Tungsten T3 is only supported in portrait mode. Categories: , ,

Styluscentral's 3 in 1 Stylus Pen for Sony Clie NR/NX,T, SL & SJ Series

If you what to see the best way to build a replacement stylus for a PDA, you don't have to look any further than this StylusCentral 3 in 1 for the Clie. Matching the look and feel of the original, this replacement gives you convenient access to a pen, stylus and reset pin.

This stylus has a metal shaft, with a pop-off plastic cover for the pen nib that fits over the stylus when writing. The plastic stylus tip is solid. You unscrew the stylus to access the reset pin. This replacement fits in the Clie SJ-22 silo snuggly; not too lose, not too tight.

Writing with the pen tip is what I would expect from something of this type. It's a little thin to be using for extensive writing, like complete the next big novel by hand, nor will you mistake it for the nib of a high-end fountain pen. It is just the pen to have handy for scribbling down a phone number or e-mail address or for signing the credit card bill when you pick up the tab for supper.

Sadly, Clies are no longer among the list of manufactured PDAs. However, if you are one of the loyal users, looking for a combo replacement stylus, Stylecentral's 3 in 1 Stylus Pen for the Clie is a good bet.

    BIBLE ATLAS FOR HANDHELDS—AN OLIVE TREE BIBLE SOFTWARE EXCLUSIVE SPOKANE, WA – (August 22, 2005) – Along with its many resources, tools and study aids, Olive Tree Bible Software recently introduced a first-of-its-kind Bible Map Atlas for handhelds. Once the private domain of cumbersome volumes, users can now simply tap into the locations of over 1150 cities/areas identified from ancient times in the colorful Bible-related maps on their Palm OS and Pocket PCs. “The Bible Atlas provides a quick reference to city, country and regional locations mentioned in the Bible,” says Kim Anderson, who provides technical support at Olive Tree. “However, its purpose is not a legal document that you could use to decide boundaries—just a quick reference.” The modern Bible student can view the entire ancient Mediterranean region on the screen at varying views, or tap a spot on the map to zoom a new location. A quick tap of the “J” icon re-centers the map at Jerusalem. Then the reader can easily switch to a split-screen to display two separate maps, or a map with Bible text (on Palm OS) and back again. Another icon brings up a list of locations that instantly re-centers the map to that particular location. What might have taken a great deal of time to thumb through in text form is now only a tap or two away on a handheld device. A special hyperlinked KJV Bible is included in the purchase of the Bible Atlas which allows users to identify over 400 locations directly from the text itself. “When I read the Word, I like to put things in context,” says K. Allen, Program Manager at Olive Tree Bible Software, “For example, if I am reading Acts about one of Paul’s missionary journeys, the Bible Map Atlas easily allows me to read about where he traveled while looking at a map at the same time.” About Olive Tree Bible Software Olive Tree Bible Software provides Bible versions and study tools for Palm OS, Pocket PC, Smartphone and Symbian cell phones, and BlackBerry devices. They publish over 80 electronic translations of the Bible as well as commentaries, dictionaries, devotionals, eBooks, and Strong’s numbering system. The Bible is offered in various languages, including German, French, Spanish, Chinese, and many others. Original Hebrew and Greek texts are also available. Additionally, web and online cell phone (WAP) Bible search engines are provided. Visit www.OliveTree.com. Posted to: , , ,

    Palm Tungsten T3 stock stylus (top) and StylusCentral 3 in 1 replacement (bottom) Seen side by side, the StylusCentral 3 in 1 Stylus & Pen for Palm Tungsten T/T2/T3 is almost identical to the stylus that comes with the unit. You would have to pull out some fine equipment to measure the differences. However, under the skin, there’s a small difference that has big convenience. Screw off the stylus/reset tip and you’ll find a ball-point pen hidden away. All in all this is a useful replacement for the stock stylus. It feels as solid as the stock item. Replacement cartridges are available from Stylus Central for $0.99 US. As much as we would like to think that all our data entry activity takes place on our handheld, there are still times when pen and ink is necessary: signing the credit card receipt, passing contact information from the PDA to a third party or quickly jotting information for later transfer to the device. There’s a little quirk that offsets some of the convenience of the pen. You have to unscrew the tip to open the pen nib and that takes six or seven rotations of the barrel; not an eternity, but a couple of extra seconds. As well, once the tip is off, it would be nice to be able to invert it and stick it on the end of the stylus while you are writing. Unfortunately, you either hold it in your hand or stick it in your mouth or put it down somewhere or, well, you get the picture. If you are standing outside the coffee shop, writing down a phone number from your Palm, trying to hold the device, the stylus and a piece of paper in two hands…The tip could be easy to lose, leaving you with a small and expensive ball-point pen. Apart from those little niggles, this replacement is so close in look and feel to the original, that you might not know which one you are using, until you screw off the tip. If you want the convenience of a pen with your stylus, the StylusCentral 3 in 1 Stylus & Pen for Palm Tungsten T/T2/T3 is a good way to go. Categories: , , ,

    Palm - About Palm, Inc. - Investor Relations - Press Release Palm and Audi Launch Communications Tool for Improved Safety and Convenience on the Road Companies Unveil Seamless Bluetooth Integration for Hands-free In-car Calling SUNNYVALE, Calif. & AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug 22, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) and Audi of America, Inc. today announced their collaboration in a new generation of communications solutions designed to improve safety and convenience for drivers: easy and totally integrated hands-free calling inside the car. Using built-in Bluetooth(R) short-range wireless technology and the Palm(R) Treo(TM) 650 smartphone(1), drivers of 2006 Audi A6 and A8 vehicles can make and receive calls(2) totally hands-free using the car's MMI(TM) (Multi Media Interface) console, voice-recognition interface(3) or steering-wheel controls. The Bluetooth integration is a major innovation the two companies are delivering as part of an alliance that includes technology co-development and integrated marketing campaigns that reach the two brands' combined audiences. 'Today people spend more time in their cars than ever before, and mobile phone usage and utility is exploding,' said John Hartnett, senior vice president, Americas, at Palm, Inc. 'As the convenience of smartphones and wireless access continues to expand worldwide, an important next step was to integrate

    these technologies into cars in a way that places safety first. Now drivers can keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, while using the Treo 650 to communicate with the outside world."

    "Audi and Palm share very similar user demographics and leadership in design, technology and brand loyalty," said Stephen Berkov, director of marketing at Audi of America, Inc. "In light of these similarities, we saw a special opportunity in the intersection of car and phone technologies."

    With the Treo 650 smartphone, Audi drivers can take advantage of the Treo 650's advanced calling features without ever touching the smartphone. After initiating Bluetooth communications between the Treo 650 and the car, drivers can use the steering-wheel controls, MMI controls on the dashboard, or the optional voice recognition to do the following:

    • Pick up or ignore incoming calls;
    • Dial outgoing calls;
    • View active call status, including caller ID;
    • View the Treo 650's call history;
    • Dial from Treo 650 favorites, speed dials, or call logs;
    • Access Treo 650 voicemail;
    • Manage multiple incoming calls; and
    • View carrier information, including signal strength and roaming status.

    Bluetooth technology comes built-in to the Treo 650 smartphone and is standard in every 2006 Audi A8 and A6, so no extra purchase is required for Treo 650 owners who also own one of these new Audi models. Bluetooth technology also is available on the 2006 Audi A3 and 2006 Audi A4 and S4 sedans and Avants when the vehicles are equipped with the optional phone preparation.

    In addition, Audi of America will introduce a special phone cradle that allows the customer to securely dock the Treo 650 smartphone in the center arm rest. The cradle provides a connection to the vehicle's external antenna for optimal reception as well as a power supply that charges the Treo 650 while in the cradle. Customers will be able to purchase the cradle from their local Audi dealer this fall.
